Throwing a great party surely goes beyond the scope of any "how to" page, since a great party can only be defined post-hoc, after it is over, and is the result of a combination of superb planning and astonishing good luck regarding such uncontrollable issues as the weather and guests' moods and interactions.
The best we can hope for is to plan ahead, with care, and then wing it.
1. Plan ahead. Start thinking about your party well in advance of the actual date. People will be much more likely to be able to attend if you tell them a while beforehand.
2. Set the date and place.
3. Decide on the guest list, and invite them.
4. Figure out what to serve in the way of the food and drinks, and make arrangements.
5. Set up the music for the party, and arrange it so that you will not be distracted from being a good host/ess by the need to tend to the music.
6. Make sure that the place is tidy and functional (i.e., that people can circulate, sit down when they need to, and use the washroom and other facilities.
7. Develop a theme and encourage your guests to dress according to the theme. Alternatively forget about the theme and blast the music in a big variety and just have fun with it.
8. Always try your best and have lots of fun!
9. Always keep your guests entertained, because if they are bored, they might leave the party.
